Internet Studies is an emerging interdisciplinary field studying the social, political, technical, cultural, artistic, and other dimensions of the Internet. The Internet Studies Program at Appalachian State University, started Fall 2002, offers an undergraduate major concentration and a minor in Internet Studies through the Interdisciplinary Studies Department in the College of Arts and Sciences, and supports teaching, research, and other activities related to Internet Studies.

Major Concentration in Internet Studies
The Interdisciplinary Studies Department at Appalachian State University offers a B.A. degree with a concentration in Internet Studies. The goal is to help students gain an understanding of the impacts this emerging technology is having on our world, as well as provide practical experience in Internet technologies. The major concentration consists of 24 semester hours, with at least 12 semester hours at the 3000 level or above. Students must take a minimum of 9 semester hours from the list of Technical/Design courses; a minimum of 9 semester hours from the list of Culture/Politics courses; IDS 3250: Internet Studies, a required seminar for all majors; plus an additional 3 semester hours from either list. In addition, students must also take 15 semester hours of required Interdisciplinary Studies core courses.

Minor in Internet Studies
The minor in Internet Studies is offered to students wishing to supplement their major with an interdisciplinary exploration of the Internet. The minor consists of 18 semester hours. Students must take a minimum of 6 semester hours from the list of Technical/Design course; a minimum of 6 semester hours from the list of Culture/Politics courses; IDS 3250, Internet Studies, a required seminar for all minors; plus an additional 3 semester hours from either list.

IDS 3250 Internet Studies.
This seminar explores the emerging interdisciplinary field of Internet Studies. Topics covered may include the digital divide, virtual communities, race and gender in cyberspace, and topics in cyberculture. These and other issues may be explored for their social, political, psychological, economic, cultural, ethical, and artistic implications. This seminar will also help students develop their critical reading and writing skills in connection with the World Wide Web, explore Internet research methodologies, and introduce students to some of the technical and editorial issues involved in Web page design and publication.
